Peace and prosperity were short lived, and the English and French were battling again by 1778. This time, the English won control airport syr of the island through agreements outlined in the 1814 Treaty of Paris. However, the British were indifferent about changing French customs, thus language, religious preference, place names, and cultural traditions remained decidedly French for the first half of the 19th century. Even today, the citizens of this English island speak a French-based patois that flows like thick honey from the back of the throat, and live in villages named Soufri re, Vieux Fort, and Gros Islet.
